Nigerians Now Owe ₦2.06 Trillion, and Honestly, Everybody's Wallet Is Just Doing Its Best
CBN says Nigerians now owe ₦2.06 trillion in personal loans, confirming the economy has entered its “I just need to reach month-end” era. At this point, salaries are no longer income, just brief layovers before loan apps deport them.

Gist time. The CBN's latest report says personal loans climbed to about ₦2.06 trillion in May 2026, which is a polite way of saying the whole country has been pressing "Borrow" the way we press "Next Episode" on Netflix. No guilt, no pause.
And it's not slowing down. Consumer credit crept up from ₦3.13tn in April to ₦3.18tn in May, so in thirty days we found another ₦50 billion to owe. Our salaries couldn't do it, so our loan apps stepped up and did it for us.
Now, what are we borrowing for? Not to start empires, abeg. Reports say loans are increasingly covering rent, medical bills, and school fees, meaning we have officially started taking loans to exist. The loan officer asks, "What's your collateral?" and the average Nigerian replies, "Sir, I am the collateral."
It gets better. A lender's report found that about 90% of borrowers earn less than ₦200,000 a month. So the plan is simple: borrow from next month to survive this month, then borrow again next month to settle the first borrowing. Peter's loan pays Paul's loan, Paul's pays Mary's, and nobody asks where Peter's money came from. That's not a financial crisis, that's a relay race.
Here's the part that should make you laugh and wince at the same time: personal loans now make up nearly 65% of all consumer credit. So when the CBN says "personal loans dominate," understand that the biggest category of Nigerian credit is basically "I just need to reach month-end."
To be fair, borrowing isn't shameful. It's rational, and lenders are doing business. But when loans move from "growing a business" to "buying garri," economists call it a warning sign. We call it Tuesday.
So if you're reading this with a repayment reminder glowing on your phone, relax. You're not alone, you're a statistic. Salary lands, loan app collects, and the alert is gone before you can even screenshot it.
Next report will probably say ₦2.1 trillion. We'll update you once our salary and our loan app finish arguing about who owns the money.

Finally, Somebody Is Flying Out of Nigeria for Treatment, and It’s Not a Governor
For once, the medical evacuation from Abuja did not involve a governor, a vague “routine check-up,” or an aide carrying small chops. Nigeria stabilised an Ebola patient, watched 52 contacts, and somehow still had to fight Uncle Emeka’s hot-water-and-salt ministry.
