MTN Says Sorry for the Outage, Thanks You for the “Patience” You Did Not Volunteer
After five hours of phones becoming ornamental calculators, MTN thanked customers for the “patience” they expressed by restarting devices, refreshing apps, and contemplating life without data. Compensation, like stable network and cheaper fuel, is reportedly under review.

My friend, did you survive Thursday? If you were in Lagos, Oyo, Rivers, Delta or Abuja and your phone suddenly became a very expensive torch, you were not alone. MTN has now apologised, and we have read the apology so you don’t have to.
First, the facts. For more than five hours, stretching into the night, calls dropped, data disappeared, and transfers froze. One customer said they had been without internet since 3 pm. Others said the trouble started the day before, so some of us lost not just a Thursday but the whole plot of the week.
MTN’s first message said it was “experiencing network challenges in some parts” of five states. Challenges. The word you use when you can’t say what happened. It’s what your friend says when he is “dealing with some things,” and you both know the things have names, phone numbers, and unpaid debts.
The cause? Not disclosed. That leaves the field wide open for every uncle on the family WhatsApp group to explain it with total confidence.
Then came the apology. MTN said it was “truly sorry for the inconvenience” and “grateful for the patience and understanding you showed during this time.” Patience? What patience? Nobody showed patience. People showed refreshing. People refreshed the same app three hundred times, restarted their phones, and switched airplane mode on and off like they were defusing a bomb. That is not patience. That is desperation with good manners.
And the technical advice for anyone still struggling? Restart your device. Of course. The universal solution for phones, laptops, generators, and, in extreme cases, entire economies. It’s also how most plans get fixed in this country: turn it off, turn it on, announce progress.
Meanwhile, customers are asking for compensation, refunds for data they bought but could not use, and extra subscription time, including FibreX users who spent the evening watching a router blink at them like a Christmas tree. As at press time, no compensation had been offered. We are sure it is under review. Everything in Nigeria is under review, including your refund.
Paying for data you can’t use is like paying for a gym membership and then being locked in the car park. You have paid, you can see the building, and you are not getting any thinner.
Services have now been restored, and your phone is a phone again. Please go outside, tell your people you are alive, and send the message you have been drafting since Thursday. And if your mother calls, pick up. She has been trying since 3 pm.

Finally, Somebody Is Flying Out of Nigeria for Treatment, and It’s Not a Governor
For once, the medical evacuation from Abuja did not involve a governor, a vague “routine check-up,” or an aide carrying small chops. Nigeria stabilised an Ebola patient, watched 52 contacts, and somehow still had to fight Uncle Emeka’s hot-water-and-salt ministry.
