Mother Did It in '91, Daughter Just Did It in 2026, and Nigeria Is Collectively Losing It
Nigeria is reacting calmly and maturely, by which we mean investigating whether beauty crowns are now hereditary property. Danielle Adewusi’s Miss Universe Nigeria win has given the country a rare feel-good story, plus fresh material for Twitter forensic experts.

Okay, so we need to talk about Danielle Adewusi, because this one is genuinely a certified movie plot and not just Twitter exaggeration for once. This woman just won Miss Universe Nigeria 2026, beating nineteen other contestants at the grand finale in Lagos, and the twist nobody saw coming: her mother, Tonia Okogbenin, held the exact same title thirty-five years ago, in 1991. Like, ma'am, are you competing or are you just collecting the family inheritance?
But wait, it gets deeper, because Danielle isn't even your typical "beauty queen who does modeling on the side" story. This woman is an actual doctor. King's College London graduate. Psychology degree too, for extra measure. Plays piano. Plays cello. At this point, we're convinced she woke up one morning and decided to be good at literally everything just to make the rest of us feel something.
Her advocacy project, "Scrub the Stigma," focuses on women's health, and she's taking it international now that she's heading to Puerto Rico for the big Miss Universe stage in November. Meanwhile, some of us are still trying to remember our own hospital appointment we've been dodging since July.
And can we talk about the sheer audacity of Guy Murray-Bruce standing there crowning her like it's just another Sunday, when the real story is a mother-daughter double crown that Nollywood itself couldn't have scripted better? Somewhere, some scriptwriter is kicking themselves for not thinking of this first.
Of course, Nigerian Twitter has already done what Nigerian Twitter does best: half the timeline is celebrating a genuine feel-good story, and the other half is already arguing about whether "genetics" or "connections" got her there, completely ignoring the King's College London degree sitting right there in the bio.
Anyway, congratulations to Danielle. Bring back that crown, and maybe also bring back some free health checkups while you're at it, we need it more than the sash.
