FG Gives Nigerians 30 Days of Cheaper Petrol, Nigerians Give FG 30 Days of Side-Eye
Government says the ₦50 petrol relief is not subsidy, just temporary kindness with better branding. Nigerians have accepted the 30-day offer and responded with 30 days of suspicious squinting at every NNPC queue not located near them.

My friend, sit down. I have news, and you will want a chair.
The Federal Government has announced a 30-day petrol discount. Before you start celebrating, please note that this is not subsidy. The Finance Minister was very clear about that. Subsidy is what we had before. This is “temporary relief.” It’s like when someone says “we’re not dating, we’re just talking” while meeting you for lunch every day and introducing you to their mother.
Here is how it works. NNPC will skip its retail profit margin, and petrol should settle around ₦1,350 a litre. Nigerians checked the pumps, did the maths, and came back with a headline: “just ₦50 a litre.” Fifty naira. A sum that now sits somewhere between loose change and an insult.
Peter Obi and Femi Falana have criticised the government’s approach. We won’t put words in their mouths, because Nigerians are already doing that on social media, free of charge.
But the real drama is at the pump. Motorists report difficulty accessing the relief. The discount is only available at NNPC stations, and NNPC stations, like friends when you need to borrow money, are never near you. In parts of Abuja, such as Apo, Lokogoma, Gudu and Galadimawa, some drivers would have to travel so far that the petrol burned on the journey cancels the saving, with enough left over to cancel your Saturday plans.
“Fine,” you say, “I don’t have a car.” Good news again. The relief will reach you the moment your bus conductor reduces the fare. Please hold your breath and your change while you wait.
The government says the plan is aimed at commuters, small businesses and households. Commuters, small businesses and households say they would very much like to meet the plan.
Several critics have also noticed that the 30 days arrive just as the 2027 politics begins to warm up. We are sure it’s a coincidence, in the same way a road in your area gets tarred two weeks before an election by pure accident.
At press time, the discount was reportedly available on every street in the country except yours. Your tank is either half empty or half full, depending on how far you had to drive.
So remember: the discount is real. So is the queue. Only one of them is guaranteed to be there when you arrive.

Finally, Somebody Is Flying Out of Nigeria for Treatment, and It’s Not a Governor
For once, the medical evacuation from Abuja did not involve a governor, a vague “routine check-up,” or an aide carrying small chops. Nigeria stabilised an Ebola patient, watched 52 contacts, and somehow still had to fight Uncle Emeka’s hot-water-and-salt ministry.
