#BBNAIJA FLORA: A Landslide Mandate to Work for Free

Flora Egbedi, 30, entrepreneur, Delta State, made history on Sunday by winning the most decisive election in Nigerian democratic history. She polled 29.38% of the vote, a genuine landslide, a mandate Obasanjo would frame,  and her prize was the constitutional removal of her access to N160 million. Nigerians came out in their millions, voted freely and fairly, and used all of that civic energy to appoint a woman into unpaid labour. This country will always find a way.

Flora came into the house describing her love life as "complicated." Her finances have now joined it. As Female Gambit, she is guaranteed a place in the house until the finale, full participation in every task, complete obedience to every rule, and no eligibility for the money those rules protect. In the private sector, this arrangement is called an internship. In the public sector, it is called a board appointment. On television, it is called a twist.

To be fair to Biggie, Flora's own manifesto invited this. She said she entered the house to "expand her personal brand," and Big Brother, ever the Nigerian employer, heard "expand her job description." She asked for visibility and was given responsibilities. She is now Biggie's agent, tasked with secretly shaping events in the house, which makes her, structurally, a civil servant: permanent, powerful, everywhere, and not the one collecting the money at the end.

Her profile lists storytelling, content creation and confidence among her talents, and she will need all three, because for the next nine weeks Flora must wake up daily, perform enthusiasm, execute directives from an unseen authority, and watch other people compete for money she cannot touch. Delta State has produced oil, militants and governors, but it has never produced a more accurate metaphor for the Nigerian worker.

Still, there is dignity here. Flora is outspoken, formidable, and won her mandate fair and square. When she leaves that house in October with no prize money and maximum name recognition, she will have completed the most Nigerian arc possible: she contested, she won overwhelmingly, and somehow the money still didn't reach her.
