NFF Has Put Eguavoen in Charge of the Super Falcons, Because Apparently One Eguavoen Is Never Enough

Nigeria has found another interim coach, and at this point “interim” is starting to sound like a permanent job description.

Nigeria’s football administration has done it again. Just when you thought the Super Falcons would finally get a permanent coach, the Nigeria Football Federation has reached into its coaching drawer and brought out Augustine “Cerezo” Eguavoen.

Again.

Eguavoen has been appointed interim coach of the Super Falcons for their 2028 Olympic qualifiers against Comoros in October, while the NFF continues searching for a substantive coach.

Now, before anybody starts shouting, Eguavoen is not exactly some random man they found standing beside a football pitch.

He led the Super Eagles to bronze at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations and has managed Nigeria at senior international level. He also knows the NFF system so well that, at this point, if you wake him up at 3am and ask him to name Nigeria’s technical problems, he might give you the full PowerPoint presentation.

But this is where Nigerian football becomes funny.

The NFF has basically said: “We are still looking for the person we really want. Meanwhile, Cerezo, please hold this.”

That “please hold this” has become a recurring Nigerian management strategy.

Need somebody to manage the Super Eagles? Eguavoen.

Need somebody to manage the Falcons temporarily? Eguavoen.

Need somebody to stabilise the situation while we “continue the search”? Eguavoen.

At this point, if Nigeria has a vacant coaching position at any national team, Eguavoen should probably just keep one suitcase permanently packed.

The appointment comes after Justin Madugu and his technical crew were sacked following the Falcons’ disappointing WAFCON campaign and failure to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

Now Eguavoen has to get the women ready for Comoros, with both Olympic qualifier legs scheduled for October 9 and 13 at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne. Nigeria received a bye into this round, while Comoros arrived after destroying Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.

Thirty.

Zero.

Please, Falcons, nobody should joke with this one.

Because if the NFF is giving us another interim arrangement, the least we can demand is that the interim period does not become another Nigerian institution.

We have seen this movie before. We just hope the ending is different.
