Nigeria's President Skipped UNGA for the Third Year Running, But Davido Showed Up to Sell Stock in Times Square

Funny thing about UNGA week this year: Nigeria's actual head of state wasn't in New York, that's three years running now, with Shettima sent instead. The two of them posed under a massive Nasdaq billboard reading "Made in Nigeria. Built for the World," promoting the Dangote Petroleum Refinery's IPO, 4.1 billion shares at ₦525 each, potentially raising ₦2.15 trillion, being called Africa's biggest ever public offering. And Davido wasn't just standing there for the photo. The man actually turned to Dangote on camera and asked him, like a proper financial correspondent, why Nigerians should buy in. Dangote's answer, essentially: buy shares, spread the wealth, and don't worry, the fertiliser business is getting listed next too.

Before all this, Davido had already posted himself and Dangote riding a bus together, dropping the line "get your IPOs if you want to get rich like us," which is a genuinely wild sentence to say out loud with a straight face, especially from someone whose own crypto token collapsed a few months ago. Sir, respectfully, one investment vehicle at a time.

Turns out this isn't random either, Davido's called Dangote his "godfather" for years, a real family friendship going back to childhood, and he says he already bought into the refinery before it even opened to the public. So this wasn't a paid cameo, this was actual loyalty.

Here's the part that stings a little though: while the President couldn't make time for the actual UN General Assembly, a musician and a cement billionaire managed to give Nigeria more visible, positive global airtime in one afternoon than the government has all week. Private sector really said: we'll represent the country ourselves then.
